The new flagship takes a top position in the premium class SUV segment with its expressive design, its innovative operating, convenience and safety systems, as well as the high quality of its materials and craftsmanship. Worldwide sales of the previous two generations amount to nearly one million units. The Touareg, as comfortable as it is dynamic, is the most technically advanced Volkswagen of its era.
Equipped with connectivity for the modern era as well as a pioneering fusion of assist, comfort, light and infotainment systems, the all-rounder leads the way into the future. With the progressively designed Touareg, Volkswagen offers a model whose “Innovision Cockpit” is already providing the blueprint for the digital interior of tomorrow. The close integration of the assist systems bring a new level of safety and comfort; challenging situations like driving through narrow motorway construction sites are made easier using automatic driving functions if required. In parallel, new running gear systems such as 4-wheel steering provide a level of agility that sets standards in the Touareg segment. As one of the most technically and visually progressive SUVs of its time, the new Volkswagen has the potential to impress drivers of any type of luxury class model with an affinity for technology and design.
Premiere of the Innovision Cockpit. Volkswagen is presenting the fully digitalised Innovision Cockpit for the first time in the new Touareg. Here the digital instruments (Digital Cockpit with 12-inch display) and the top Discover Premium infotainment system (with 15-inch display) merge to form a digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit that hardly needs any conventional buttons or switches. With the Innovision Cockpit, the Touareg provides the blueprint for tomorrow’s digital interior today.
A focus on people. Drivers use the Innovision Cockpit to adapt the assistance, handling and comfort systems specifically to their personal tastes; the car becomes ‘their’ Touareg. This opens up a world in which the driver and on-board passengers no longer have to adapt to the car; rather the car adapts to them. Like a new smartphone, the Volkswagen is set up and tuned to personal needs and this is made possible by a new high level of connected systems and programmes controlled via digital interfaces and the multifunction steering wheel.
Fusion of new assistance, handling and comfort systems. The Touareg is launching with the largest range of assistance, handling and comfort systems ever to be integrated into a Volkswagen. These include technologies such as the optional Night Vision assistance system, part of the Advanced Safety Package: Lane Assist & Side Assist with Night Vision and Head-up display, detects people and animals in the darkness via a thermal imaging camera, active 4-wheel steering (makes the Touareg handle like a compact car) and ‘IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights’ (interactive, camera-based dipped and main beam headlight control). These systems are interconnected via a new central control unit working imperceptibly in the background and making travel safer, more convenient and more intuitive than ever.
New dimensions and reduced weight. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation Touareg is moderately wider and longer. The new dimensions have positive effects on both the vehicle’s proportions and the amount of interior space. The added exterior length leads, for example, to a significant increase in luggage capacity, from 697 to 810 litres (with the rear bench seat up). Despite its increased length and width, the car body is 106 kg lighter because of its mixed material construction of aluminium
(48%) and high-tech steels (52%).
V6 TDI delivering 190kW. The 3.0 TDI V6 engine outputs 190 kW of power between 3,250 and 4,250 rpm. This common rail turbodiesel engine with 2,967 cm³ displacement develops a strong 600 Newton- metres torque from 2,250 rpm – 3,250 rpm.
Modular longitudinal matrix. The design of the new Touareg is based on the modular longitudinal matrix (MLM) of the Volkswagen Group. It includes models starting from the top mid-class with engines and gearboxes installed longitudinally. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation is moderately wider and longer, making it flatter. The new dimensions: 4,878 mm length (+77 mm), 1,984 mm width (+44 mm) and 1,702 mm height (-7 mm). The increase in length and width in conjunction with the slightly reduced height leads to significantly more dynamic proportions.
Alternative to the establishment. Volkswagen head designer Klaus Bischoff and his team transferred the design of the Touareg to a new time and dimension. Design and technology correspond perfectly. With the third generation Touareg, Volkswagen has refined the positioning of its flagship – an exclusive all-rounder that forms an alternative to the establishment with its pioneering, innovative technology, its versatility as well as its excellent comfort and dynamic properties. The expressive design of the Touareg reflects the new positioning.
Superior flagship. While the first generation SUV was characterised by a dominant off-road DNA, this direction increasingly changed from the second generation to the new Touareg towards a progressive, modern and exclusive all-rounder, but always still ready to master the dirt tracks of the planet and to reach any destination.
Front end. The expressive front end of the Touareg is particularly distinctive. The chromed solid grille appears to be machined from solid metal and seamlessly interwoven with the continuous lines of the signature light. Head Designer, Klaus Bischoff says: “We wanted to create something with this front end that had never been seen before. We combined the chrome elements of the front end and the new LED light system of the Touareg so that the transition between design and technology blended into a new entity. Innovative, expressive and impossible to imitate. This front end makes the new Touareg one of the most distinctive SUVs on the global market.“
Silhouette. The sides of the Touareg body look like a stretched sail blown by a tailwind. Accentuated front wheel housings and well-formed rear shoulder edges highlight the superiority of the Touareg on any terrain. And this was the goal – to design the most superior SUV of its class. The opposing window lines and character lines at the side are stylish. And the roof line is striking. It seamlessly extends on the striking side line and dynamically concludes with the C-pillar that is angled towards the front.
New range of rims. The increase in dynamics is also reflected in the new range of Touareg rims. Each rim design harmonises with the design of the silhouette. The size of the alloy wheels now starts at 18 inches instead of 17-inches and ends with the 21-inch format. The wheels available include the 18 inch alloy wheels “Concordia”, the 19-inch alloy wheels “Esperance”, the 20-inch alloy wheels “Braga” and “Nevada” as well as the 21-inch alloy wheel “Suzuka”.
Rear end. The wide shoulder above the rear wheels and the resulting indented greenhouse form a rear end with a strong presence. This superiority is emphasised by the LED taillight clusters. They not only highlight the large total width of the Touareg but also the LED graphic of the front end with its L-shaped signature light. The aesthetics of the shape is by no means detrimental to functionality. To the contrary, almost the entire width is filled out by the boot lid – but it can hardly be seen; what remains in your memory is therefore unique and solely the dynamics of the Touareg.
“Innovision Cockpit” as the centre. The optional “Innovision Cockpit” celebrates its world première in the third generation Touareg. It is the control centre of a new era – an interactive interface for the Touareg where the information and settings of all essential comfort, assist and infotainment systems converge in one matrix. The interior designers completely redesigned the vehicle interior of the Touareg and consistently customised it for the digital age. The majority of all buttons are integrated in the 15-inch (1,920 x 1,020 pixel) screen of the top infotainment system, “Discover Premium”, that is curved towards the driver. This also includes the control of the 2-zone air conditioning system or the 4-zone air conditioning system as well as the activation of seat heating and seat ventilation. Intuitive and frequently used switches such as the volume control have a deliberate analogue design (alternatively the volume can also be changed using a touch function on the screen of the infotainment system). The glass-covered display of the “Discover Premium“ to the side of the driver is visually connected to the “Digital Cockpit” that is also covered in glass – the 12-inch high resolution digital instruments (1,920 x 720 pixel) of the Touareg. Both displays produce a consistent digital landscape in a one screen design on one viewing and operating axis. The “Innovision Cockpit” can be enhanced with an optional “head-up display” that virtually projects important information in the space in front of the driver on the windscreen. The “Innovision Cockpit” is a departure from the conventional – never before has a Volkswagen interior of this type been digitalised and extensively linked to the vehicle functions and outside world to such an extent.
“Digital Cockpit” in detail. The “Digital Cockpit” is a completely digitalised alternative to the standard analogue instruments of the Touareg and a central component of the “Innovision Cockpit”. The layout of the 12-inch display can be personalised by the driver via the home screen or using the multifunction steering wheel. The layout as well as the type and range of displays can be varied depending on your taste. If less is preferred, it can be reduced to just the navigation or the media centre (as well as the digital speed and selector lever display), for example. The daily and total number of kilometres display is always active and remains at the same position at the bottom.
Different system displays can also be integrated in the “Digital Cockpit”:
Head-up display. The information of the head-up display (windshield head-up display) is projected directly onto the windscreen. The display is in the direct field of vision of the driver – they can therefore obtain all the main information without looking away from the road. The head-up display has a virtual screen size of 217 x 88 mm making it the largest display of this type offered by Volkswagen to date. The driver can vary the range of displays in the head-up display.

The highest level of comfort, quality and exclusivity. Regardless of how rough and demanding the onroad and offroad terrain of the new Touareg may sometimes be, the vehicle interior of the Volkswagen SUV always remains a luxurious comfort zone. The screens of the “Innovision Cockpit” with their glass covered surfaces as well as the aluminium and chrome details allow the extraordinarily high quality to be seen and felt. The individualisation of the interior is achieved with two trim lines: “Luxury” and “Executive”.
Largest Volkswagen panoramic sliding roof. Natural light comes in through the largest panoramic sliding roof that Volkswagen has ever realised in the vehicle interior. The transparent roof section is 1,270 mm long and 825 mm wide (inner dimension). The front half of the roof can be continuously opened and electrically moved back by 495 mm and raised. An electrically activated cloth roller blind reduces the sun rays. Panoramic glass sunroof is offered as a standard feature.
Ambient light in 30 colours. Night rides are now more pleasant thanks to a newly developed LED ambient light. Using the ambient light, the atmosphere on board the Touareg can also be personalised. Here, 30 light colours whose brightness can be continuously adjusted are available as an option.
An overview of the ambient light zones:
“Discover Pro” (standard navigation system). “Discover Pro” is the standard navigation system. The glass-covered TFT touchscreen of the radio navigation system is 9.2-inch in size. As for the optional “Discover Premium”, “Discover Pro” also has a proximity sensor system and the innovative gesture control, usable 10GB memory, two SD card slots as well as a Bluetooth mobile phone interface. Smartphones can also be integrated and charged via two USB ports.
“Discover Premium”. At the centre of the “Innovision Cockpit” is the top infotainment system “Discover Premium” – a radio navigation system, telephone, information centre and interface for configuring various vehicle functions at the same time. A functional and visual highlight is the display that for the first time is designed as a curved sheet of glass. This is operated with “Discover Premium” equipped with a proximity sensor via the touchscreen and by means of gesture and voice control depending on the function. The equipment includes 10GB usable memory, two SD card slots, an AUX-IN socket, four USB ports as well as a Bluetooth mobile phone interface.
Personalised settings. Including those of the “Innovision Cockpit” and the “Head-up Display”, personal settings are saved in the vehicle system and automatically called up using the personal vehicle key. This is particularly practical when the Touareg has been driven with another key by a friend or family member. Alternatively, the settings can be activated when starting using a menu that opens automatically. A total of seven profiles of different drivers can be saved in the Touareg.
Optional Dynaudio sound system with 730 Watt output. The new Touareg is fitted with an 80 Watt power amplifier that is integrated in the central computer of the infotainment system. The sound is transmitted via four treble loudspeakers (two in the A-pillars, two in the front door panel) each with a 65 mm diameter as well as four 200 mm bass loudspeakers in the front and back doors. As an option there is a high-end sound system that was specifically tailored for use in the new Touareg together with Danish audio specialists Dynaudio. The system uses a Dolby 7.1 power amplifier with a power of 730 Watt to power a total of 12 loudspeakers
Two trim lines. Two trim lines are available for the Touareg: Luxury and Executive. Luxury stands for a technical interior world dominated by metal and matching colours while the Executive has a sporty design.

The new Touareg is one of the safest and most comfortable cars in the world. The broad range of its driver assist system contributes to this. The driver benefits from the interaction of the assist systems in the Touareg more than ever. As a result, comfort and safety reach a new level.
Night Vision. The new Touareg is the first Volkswagen available with a night vision system. A thermal image camera (infrared camera) registers infrared radiation coming from a living being. Any persons or animals detected are marked yellow or red, depending on the risk, in a black and white image. The image itself is transmitted to the Digital Cockpit. If Night Vision registers a risk, it actively warns the driver (via information in the Digital Cockpit and optional head-up display). At the same time the brakes and the brake assist system are pre-conditioned to provide the highest deceleration rate if required. Thanks to the new, interactive “IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights” (available only in the Executive model), people in a potential danger area are briefly flashed to make them more visible for the driver and as a warning.
Trailer Assist. Trailer Assist allows the driver to no longer have to think about the complex task of having to turn the steering wheel to the left so that trailer turns to the right (and vice versa) when manoeuvring in reverse with a car and trailer.
The following components and assist systems are combined to make the innovative Trailer Assist:
Park Assist. The Park Assist system uses ultrasound sensors in the area of the front and rear side as well as sensors in the wheels to measure the parking space. The control unit of Park Assist gives the steering system precise commands concerning how the car is to be directed into the parking space. If a trailer is coupled, the control unit of the Park Assist changes to the “Trailer Assist” mode and provides the steering system with appropriate information about which direction it must drive so that the trailer is perfectly directed.
Rear View. As an electronic eye, the rear view camera system is focused on the tow bar of the trailer. It views the tow bar as a compass needle – in this way, the camera recognises the current angle of the trailer to the rear of the car. The control unit of Park Assist converts this angle into the current steering angle of the trailer.
Mirror setting. The rotary knob of the electric adjustment of exterior mirrors on the driver’s side acts as a multi-function joystick with which the articulation angle of the trailer is determined.
Display in the cockpit. The multi-function display between the speedometer and rev counter or Digital Cockpit displays which articulation angle of the trailer is set when “Trailer Assist” is activated.
How to manoeuvre. To manoeuvre a car and trailer in reverse, the driver stops behind the bay for the space for the trailer and shifts to reverse gear. The system is activated by pressing the Park Assist button. Now the mirror adjustment switch is displayed on the display. The driver gets information on how he can set the desired steering angle. As soon as he moves the switch, a symbol with trailer appears on the display. Here the current articulation angle and the articulation angle of the trailer newly set by the driver are displayed. With the aid of the external mirror switch, the driver sets the desired direction of travel of his car and trailer. “Trailer Assist” takes over the specified steering angle. The car and trailer is automatically aligned using the control unit of Park Assist and using the electromechanical power steering. In the first manoeuvring phase, the driver selects the articulation angle (up to 75°) to turn in reverse in a certain direction or to drive on a curve. If the trailer is then in the direction of the destination, the driver finally simply draws the mirror adjustment switch back. The car and trailer now drive precisely in reverse in the trailer direction without having to still make manual corrections.
Multicollision brake. Around 25% of all accidents with personal injury are collisions that take place after the actual first accident. Such further collisions can be possibly prevented or their severity at least reduced using the standard “multicollision brake”. After a collision and as part of the limits of the system, the “multicollision brake” automatically introduces braking before the driver can respond. The second generation of “multicollision brake” is now used in the Touareg. Braking now takes place until standstill. At the same time the preventive safety measures of the “proactive occupant protection system” are activated. In addition the intensity of the stabilising brake hard is increased up to 1g.
IQ.Light Matrix LED headlight. For the third generation Touareg, one of the world’s best headlight systems was developed together with HELLA, the German automobile supplier: the “IQ.Light Matrix LED headlight”. It is impressive with an interactive light control that makes night rides more comfortable and safer. The Volkswagen designers and engineers together with the team from HELLA succeeded in completely merging the LED light system with a three dimensional design consisting of the headlights, daytime running lights, blinker and cornering light with the superior and charismatic front end of the Touareg and designing a distinctive daytime and night light design.
128 LEDs per headlight. The LED headlights use a matrix made of light spots – individual LEDs that can be activated. The matrix of the dipped beam is made up of a printed circuit with 48 LEDs while the circuit board of the main beam is fitted with 27 LEDs. The LEDs in the dipped and main beam module are arranged similar to a chessboard. There are various LEDs in addition to the total of 75 LEDs of the dipped and main beam. Including the surround lighting as well as the so-called signal functions (daytime running light and elevated side light as well as animated turn signal), there are a total of 128 LEDs per headlight. The Touareg therefore uses the power of a total of 256 LEDs in the various segments of the left and right headlights at the front to make the night safe and as bright as day.
Intelligent light functions. Various intelligent light functions from the electronics of the Touareg are activated using the 75 LEDs of the dipped and main beam as well as seven 75 front end LEDs (in five reflection chambers) and three cornering light LEDs. The corresponding computer uses the signals of the front camera, the digital card data of the navigation system, the GPS signals, the steering wheel angle as well as the current speed to precisely activate the individual LEDS for the best light in a split second. The driver switches on the main beam headlight via “Dynamic Light Assist”. The Touareg manages the rest itself – dim, turn up, city lighting, optimum highway light or offroad light. As the new matrix headlights operate with the highest light output, people, objects, other vehicles and animals are made visible that would be less recognisable and less visible earlier on with conventional headlight systems in night-time darkness. The increase in light output and optimised illumination is clearly noticeable.
An interesting point: The comparison between the very good xenon headlights of the predecessor and the new Touareg LED system results in a range increase of more than 100 metres for the “IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights” for the main beam. The interactive headlights already operate similar to those in a car with an autonomous driving mode. For example, the front camera registers brightly illuminated areas as “residential”. In this case the Touareg automatically switches from main beam to low beam.
Details of the light functions of the IQ.Light Matrix LED headlight:
City lighting: A particularly wide light beam with a focus on the sides; active up to 50 km/h.
Dipped headlight: Dipped beam with wide light distribution in the direction of the kerbside.
Side light: Permanent main beam on country roads without blinding other road users.
Highway dipped beam: Narrower light beam focussed on a wide reach for high speeds.
Highway light: Narrower light beam focussed on a wide reach for high speeds if no other road users are blinded.
Overtaking light: Precise main beam for overtaking procedures without blinding road users. The system recognises that the Touareg pulls out to the side. This side area is now illuminated more intensely.
Main beam: Manually activated main beam to deliberately use all 75 LEDs of the headlight for maximum illumination. In contrast to the highway light, the light beam is wider.
Poor weather light: Reduces blinding for the driver and other road users on wet roads. It is activated when the rain sensor detects rainfall. The annoying reflections of the headlight on the wet, reflective road surface directly in front of the driver are reduced by the “IQ.Light” reducing illumination intensity in this area.
Sign glare control: Precise suppression of the main beam on signs so that the reflected light of the headlight does not blind the driver.
Offroad light: A particularly powerful dipped beam focussed on the width to be able to recognise obstacles on terrain.
Spotlight (for “Night Vision”): Focussed illumination of people detected by “Night Vision” (infrared camera) without dazzling to make them easier to see for the driver.
LED taillight clusters. LED technology is also used for the taillight clusters. The design and the LED contours give the rear area a distinctive nightlight signature. Prominently visible in daytime and at night and equipped with signal effect: the brake light with distinctive changeover of the LED areas (”click-click effect”). The rear turn signals also have an animated design (”wiping”) in the Executive.
3.5 tonne maximum trailer weight and new towing bracket. The new Touareg is one of the few passenger cars designed for maximum trailer weights up to 3.5 tonne (braked, up to 12% gradient). Due to its running gear configuration, permanent all-wheel drive and high-torque V6 engine, the Touareg masters these trailer weight effortlessly. The towbar was newly developed and now offers a maximum level of comfort as the ball neck of the towing bracket is electrically retracted out and extended from the underbody with a press of a button. Thanks to the new system of the towing bracket, bicycle carriers for up to four instead of three bicycles can now be mounted.
Running gear systems – A new level of performance. Light aluminium for the running gear. The running gear of the new Touareg was largely newly developed to further perfect the comfort and dynamic properties. Volkswagen is once again offering a 4-Corner air suspension with electronic damping control for the Touareg as an option. It has been significantly enhanced. An all-wheel steering system that makes the large SUV agile and manoeuvrable similar to a compact SUV has also been newly developed. Generally five-link suspensions with a light aluminium/steel design are used.

All-wheel steering system. Another innovation on board the new Touareg is the optional all-wheel steering system. This is because all four wheels are driven at the same time depending on the driving situation. The all-wheel steering system helps the Touareg to be the most agile large SUV. The all-wheel steering system essentially affects two driving states: speeds below 37 km/h and speeds over 37 km/h. Up to 37 km/h, the rear wheels drive automatically at an opposing angle to the front wheels. As a result, agility and manoeuvrability is improved. Particularly when manoeuvring the turning circle, reduced by one metre from 12.19 m to 11.19 m with all-wheel steering, is noticeable. If the speed increases to more than 37 km/h, the rear wheels automatically drive in the same direction when steering in the same way as the front wheels. As a result, the driving behaviour is significantly smoother as the all-wheel steering stabilises the lane change – when overtaking quickly. The same applies for sudden evasive manoeuvres.
Enhanced 4-Corner air suspension. The new generation 4-Corner air suspension not only perfects the level of comfort, but also the aerodynamics and trips on rough terrain. The new open air suspension system operates quickly and silently and is insensitive to temperature and outside pressure fluctuations (as in the mountains). The air suspension is at the “Normal level” or “Comfort level” as standard. In addition a “Terrain level” increased by 25 mm and a “Special terrain level” by 70 mm are also available. At speeds from 120 km/h, the running gear is automatically lowered by 15 to 25 mm using the air suspension (deep level) to reduce the air resistance and adjust the driving behaviour. Last but not least, there is a “Load level” (minus 40 mm) available that simplifies loading and unloading the luggage compartment.
Air suspension optimises offroad parameters. The offroad parameters change depending on the suspension. The maximum climbing capability (60%) and transverse gradient (35⁰) are identical with steel and air suspension. The front and rear ramp angle increases with air suspension from 25⁰ to 31⁰. The breakover angle also increases from 18.5⁰ to 25⁰. As the ground clearance can be increased with air suspension, the maximum wading depth also increases (from 490 to 570 mm). The manually adjustable level of the air suspension is activated using rotary pushbutton switches in the centre console.

The totally new developed model emphasises emotionality in the premium class. In addition to a new and emotive outline, Volkswagen is also introducing with the Arteon a highly expressive, horizontally accentuated brand look. The bars of the radiator grille extend into the three-dimensional front headlights, while LED lighting elements additionally emphasise the striking layout and demonstrate dominance. The five-door gran tourismo impresses through revolutionary design and great practical value in use. While the doors’ frameless windows reflect the typical stylistic elements of a grand tourer, the top-hinged and wide-opening tailgate provides optimum access to the huge boot.
The name Arteon – with the emphasis put on the first syllable – is made up of two component parts: ‘Art’ describes the fastback’s harmonious lines and emotionality. The ending ‘eon’ identifies it, in the same way as Volkswagen’s top model for the Chinese market, the Phideon, as a premium model.
The Arteon is Volkswagen’s top passenger model and the new Volkswagen gran turismo is produced at the German plant in Emden.
Combining avant-garde design with a high level of versatility was the key objective for designers and developers of the Arteon. This resulted in an interior architecture which is exceptionally spacious – with ample head and leg room at all seats – which is extraordinary for this body form. Key design elements of the charismatic Arteon include its completely new front end, in which the LED headlights and daytime running lights merge with the chrome-plated crossbars of the radiator grille and the bonnet. The car’s remarkable shoulder section is another defining feature of its design. The five-seat Arteon is an ideal avant-garde alternative – a car for people who want a five-door fastback with an accomplished, elegant design and progressive technology.
Other equipment features making their debut in the Arteon include the latest generation of driver assistance systems. Interesting features have been added that are typically reserved for luxury vehicles. This unique combination makes the Arteon one of the most attractive products in its segment.
The athletic lines of the Arteon embody a highly functional overall concept. Form and function find common ground here in a progressive way. Thanks to its long wheelbase, stretched roofline, coupé-style fastback design and a large rear hatch, this gran turismo provides more space and flexibility than conventional saloons.
Perfect proportions. The new Arteon is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). This configuration naturally creates space. A long wheelbase of 2,841 mm spans the two axles. Accordingly, the body overhangs of the 4,862 mm long fastback model are short and concise. The Arteon is
1,871 mm wide and 1,427 mm tall. These dimensional relationships deliver truly dynamic proportions – a visual starting point for Volkswagen designers.
Charismatic Arteon exhudes dynamism. One of the most important design elements of the charismatic new Arteon is the front section. Stand-out features include a bonnet that extends a long way forward and partially over both wings and a radiator grille that encompasses the vehicle’s full width. The LED headlights and daytime running lights, fitted as standard, combine with the chrome-plated cross-bars of the radiator grille and bonnet. The result is a front-end design that would be a match even for a high-calibre sports car.
Pure sporting doctrine. Designed in the style of a sports car are the striking and powerful shoulder sections at the rear, the muscular wings and the flared wheel arches above the up-to-20-inch alloy wheels. Seen in silhouette between the axles is a waistline that also follows a pure sports car design doctrine.
Innovative, economical and perfectly suited to everyday use. The Arteon is re-interpreting the ‘gran turismo’ concept with its combination of
avant-garde design, sporty charisma, great flexibility and generous space. Further aspects that would be considered plus points in any vehicle class include excellent rear legroom and luggage space. On the technical front, the new Volkswagen impresses with two highly efficient engines, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, plus digitalised displays and controls. Further features include an Active Info Display (fully digital and programmable instruments), a head-up display and the new Discover Pro infotainment system with a 9.2-inch glass screen and gesture control.
Interactive assistance systems. The Arteon’s innovative driver assistance and convenience systems match its avant-garde concept. Thanks to the navigation system’s GPS and road data, the new dynamic cornering lights with predictive beam control anticipate when a bend is approaching and illuminate it before the driver actively turns into the bend.
Two lines facilitate a high degree of personalisation. Despite its progressive concept, the Arteon is a car available at an attractive price with a high degree of value. The gran turismo will be available in two exclusive equipment lines: the ‘Elegance’ and ‘R-Line’. The name says it all. The standard configuration of the Arteon Elegance is focused primarily on the fusion of sophisticated styling and premium luxury. The Arteon R-Line, meanwhile, puts sportiness and premium class equipment at the heart of the vehicle’s configuration – as is typical of all Volkswagen R-Line models.
Based on the different orientations of these two equipment lines, the fastback model presents two vastly different personas. The range of standard equipment on R-Line includes features such as a panoramic sunroof, Air Care Climatronic 3-zone climate control, front sport seats with massage functionality and Nappa leather/Carbon style interior.
Dynamic proportions as ideal foundation. The new Arteon sits on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). Transverse stands here for engines that are transversely mounted in the front. This creates space. A long wheelbase of 2,841 mm spans between the two axles. Accordingly, the body overhangs of the 4,862 mm long fastback model are short and concise. The Arteon is 1,427 mm high and 1,871 mm wide. These dimensional interrelationships deliver truly dynamic proportions – a visual starting point for Volkswagen designers.
The design of the Arteon develops from the front end. Design overcomes class barriers. Viewing the Arteon’s front end without focusing on the details, the first impression is that of a dynamic gran turismo that borders on being both a sports model and a saloon – a gran turismo. But as soon as the details are considered it becomes clear how expressive and logical, harmonious and precise the design is. That is because good design is no accident. Rather, it is a symbiosis of creativity, precision and a high level of handcrafting art. In the case of a car, there is the added challenge that breathtaking ideas also need to be industrially viable. In the Arteon, these parameters merge into a gran turismo whose design overcomes class barriers.
Bonnet like that of a sports car. The overall car design develops from the active bonnet (with integrated safety mechanism for pedestrian protection) and the interconnected grille. The fact is that in the automotive world, a bonnet that extends over the entire front end up to the wheel arches is primarily a feature of classic sports cars. “It is one of the largest bonnets in the entire Volkswagen Group”, according to Tobias Sühlmann. The Volkswagen exterior designer explains further: “It is really like that of a sports car. When you open the bonnet you see the wheel housing shells.
That is unconventional for a car of this type.“
LEDs and radiator grille merge. All of the contoured lines of the bonnet are extended to the radiator grille – and vice versa. The grille, in turn, emphasises the significant width of the Arteon in its cross-slats. There is no Volkswagen radiator grille that is wider or deeper than the one on this gran turismo – it is the ‘face’ of a new Volkswagen generation. The upper cross-bars enclose the LED headlights, and they simultaneously use finely integrated LED light conductors to perform the functions of daytime running lights and position lights, and, in the R-Line version version, the indicator function. The lighting elements, radiator grille and bonnet now form one harmonious unit. The bonnet, which extends slightly over the LED headlights makes a tremendous contribution towards the superior qualities of the front-end design. The bonnet lip runs over the headlights while continuing the lines of the radiator grille further into the sides and to the rear of the Arteon. On the sides, the sharp bonnet lines over the wheel wells give the Arteon an extremely low and sporty look.
Side profile of a superior gran turismo. Elegant, low, coupé-like. “We have a line”, says Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen Head of Design, “that runs through the entire car and brings the volume of the Arteon even closer to the ground. This line starts in the radiator grille at the front and runs cleanly over the side profile and into the tail lights.” On the car’s sides it creates what is known as the character line. At the rear, it develops into a sharp undercut, which visually reduces the Arteon’s height and carries the strong shoulder section upwards. Above this, there is the long line of windows (known as a DLO – daylight opening) that extends into the C pillar. The door windows themselves are frameless, while the DLO is surrounded by an elegant chrome frame. The DLO gives the Arteon an elegant, low and coupé-like look together with the character line that runs from the bonnet rearwards into the tail lights.
Rear section follows styling of a classic sports car. The shoulder section is athletic and muscular. Viewed from the rear, it is easy to see just how dominant the shoulder sections of this fastback are. The muscular form stretches to the side and into the rear bodywork. From a slightly elevated perspective this produces a rear end design which, in its lines – a coupé-shaped glasshouse (roof and glass surfaces) on strong flanks – follows the example of a classic sports car and yet offers the volume of a business class gran turismo. Also creating a powerful image from this perspective is the striking width of the Arteon. Creating an unmistakable design at night are the concise LED tail lights with a dynamic indicator function.
Very expressive colours. The styling lines of the Arteon are as precise as they are dynamic, and they are accentuated by many new exterior body colours. These include the distinctive hues “Curcuma Yellow”,
“Atlantic Blue” and “Chili Red”. Fitting in well with the progressive character of the Arteon is “Curcuma Yellow”, for instance – a colour inspired by a sense of lightness and sunshine, and which accentuates the sporty character of the new gran turismo.
Digital cockpit environment. The clean design, high level of ergonomic efficiency and numerous interactive interfaces between human and machine create a calm, elegant and progressive atmosphere in the new Arteon. The interactive and digitalised interfaces include optional
high-tech features such as the Active Info Display which is standard on the
R-Line (fully digitalised instruments) and a head-up display. Volkswagen has developed new infotainment systems (6.5 to 9.2 inch). The new top system, the Discover Pro, has a tablet-like glass surface. It manages its tasks efficiently, and entirely without analogue buttons. The 9.2-inch display is also equipped with intuitive gesture control.
Air vent band as a design statement. The way in which a line, designed as a single visual unit of the dashboard and door shoulders, appears to wrap around the five passengers like a cocoon is unconventional and unique. The horizontally oriented dashboard transitions homogeneously into the front door trim panels. The team, led by Volkswagen Head of Interior Design, Tomasz Bachorski, designed the dashboard with a simplified layout that runs in a straight line with a clean and iconic design. The central design element of the dashboard is an innovative air vent – designed as a functional yet decorative element – that extends across the entire width of the interior like a band. This impression is completed by fine chrome trim strips on the vent louvres, which create a visual link to the cross-bars of the newly developed Arteon radiator grille.
Elegant ambient lighting. Beneath the air vent and a decorative panel there is an extremely low-profile ambient lighting strip that continues into the doors. Its wrap-around lighting effect defines the space and creates a soothing and pleasant ambience. The centre console fits in well with the Arteon’s avant-garde and sporty character. It ascends steeply towards the dashboard, as in a sports car, where it meets the climate controls and the latest generation infotainment systems. Ambient lighting is standard on the R-Line model in blue, white and orange.
Best in class legroom. In front, the driver and front passenger benefit from the excellent package provided by the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB); a lot of space is created by the transversely mounted engine and the front axle that is forward positioned. The long wheelbase of 2,841 mm is therefore used to create very spacious premium class accommodation for rear passengers. Consider legroom, for instance: the figure of 1,016 mm attained here is the best in the competitive set. Rear headroom is also excellent thanks to the long roof. The two outer seat positions have the visual and ergonomic character of individual seats.
Colour & Trim. Sportiness and elegance are the dominant aspects of the Arteon. The Colour & Trim design area has also co-ordinated its selection of materials and colours to these aspects in the interior of this gran turismo. Two interior colour themes (black, dark grey and a combination of dark and light grey) match the range of exterior colours. In the Elegance, you get Titanium Black seats, instrument panel and carpets with a Mistral Grey headliner. In the R-Line, you get Titanium Black seats, instrument panel, carpets and headliner.
Safety systems – interactive technologies. The Arteon’s innovative driver assistance and convenience systems match its progressive overall concept.
The new or further developed systems are:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Front Assist and City Emergency Braking; the latest generation now also integrates speed limits (camera based) and navigation data into its control.
Active Bonnet; In the event of a collision with a pedestrian or cyclist, the active bonnet of the new Arteon is raised in a matter of seconds. This occurs once a message from the relevant sensors has been sent to the airbag control unit. This initiates the ignition of the pyrotechnic actuators, which, in turn, raise the active hinges in a matter of seconds. By triggering this hinge, the end of the bonnet next to the windscreen lifts up by around 60 mm, which increases the deformation space across very hard parts of the cylinder block and provides a cushion in the event of a collision, particularly for the victim’s head – this is standard across the range.
Head-up Display; The head-up display brings important driving information into your field of vision: directly in front of the
windscreen – this feature is optional across the range.
Park Pacakage with Area View; Area View makes use of cameras positioned around the vehicle to create a 360 degree birds-eye view on the infotainment system display.
Efficient TSI and TDI engines. The new Arteon is launching with two turbocharged direct fuel injection engines. All of the engines have four cylinders. The diesel engine delivers 130kW while the powerful TSI delivers 206kW.
Dual clutch gearbox for all versions. All of the engines are only available with an automated dual clutch gearbox (DSG). The TSI engine also has 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard. The diesel models have front-wheel drive. Dynamic Chassic Control is standard across the range.
Diesel engine. The four-cylinder diesel 2.0 TDI with 130kW power output has 350 Nm of torque that is available between 1 608and 3 500rpm. The combined fuel consumption is 5.6 litres per 100 kilometers. The engine is available with a 6-speed DSG transmission.
Petrol engine. The top of the range petrol engine is the 2.0 TSI with 206kW power output. It has 350 Nm of torque that is available from 1 700 up to
5 600 rpm. The 0-100km/h sprint is achieved in 5.6 seconds and has top speed of 250km/h. The combined fuel consumption is 7.3 litres per
100 kilometres. The 206kW engine is only available with a 7-speed DSG transmission.

The new Polo Vivo is based on the fifth-generation Polo which has been enhanced both visually and technically. The driver assistance and infotainment systems as well as the new TSI engine now available with a 6-speed manual transmission, have taken the new Polo Vivo to another level.
Visually, the new Polo Vivo can be identified by a sharper front and rear design. In addition, the new model introduces fresh colours, new interior materials and new specifications.
The new Polo Vivo model range will be launched with three equipment lines, Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The hatch body version is also available in a top of the range GT derivative.
The Trendline, Comfortline and Highline have new interior trims which add exciting ambience and feel into the cabin of the new Polo Vivo. A new gear knob with leatherette gearshift has been introduced. Comfortline, Highline and GT derivatives now have a height adjustable driver seat.
For in-car entertainment, new Polo Vivo customers have an option of Radio 140G SD/USB/Bluetooth with four speakers (standard on Trendline and Comfortline). Highline and GT get two extra speakers for sound enhancement as well as the Colour Touchscreen Radio 340G which includes App-Connect.

Front end. The front-end design has a much more three-dimensional and sporty look due to its redesigned bumper and larger lower air intake.
Rear section. In the rear bumper area, the car’s width is emphasised by styling cues, including a cleaner horizontal layout and a wider cut-out for the licence plate. The trapezoidal outer contour of this area extends towards the rear wheels, which creates a more dynamic tension of surfaces. The rear reflectors, now embedded in the bumper, also give the visual impression of greater width. The rear lights were also redesigned.
Side profile. From the side, the new Polo can be differentiated by the new alloy wheels. The wheel line-up consists of the standard steel wheels for the Polo Trendline and Comfortline (14 inch) and optional 15-inch ‘Estrada’ alloy wheel, 16 inch ‘Rivazza’ for the Polo Highline and the 17-inch ‘Mirabeau’ alloy wheel which comes standard in the top of the range GT model.
Body colours. The new Polo Vivo is available in the following body colours:

New layout of instruments and centre console. Many new ergonomic and visual improvements have been made inside the latest Polo Vivo. Aside from the three-spoke steering wheel, the new instrument cluster look catches the eye immediately; the instruments are in typical Volkswagen design language.
New radio systems. Located on the next control level of the centre console is the infotainment system, which is ideally positioned in the field of view. The new Polo Vivo now gets Volkswagen’s “modular infotainment system” (MIB) radio system.
Modern engines for driving enjoyment and fuel efficiency
The new Polo Vivo model range is offered with three four-cylinder petrol engines, 1.4, 1.6 liters and one three-cylinder TSI engine. The power output of the four-cylinder engines range from 55 kW to 77 kW. These engines are available with 5-speed manual transmissions as standard. The Tiptronic transmission is available with the
77kW 1.6 engine, while the top of the range GT comes with the 1.0TSI 81kW engine in 6-speed manual.
1.4 delivering 55kW – Trendline
The entry engine in the Polo Vivo model range is the 1.4-liter with the 55 kW power output available 4800rpm. This engine has ample power and torque for dynamic and everyday driving. From 3750rpm, the engine peaks at 130 Nm. In addition to its lively performance, the 1.4-liter engine has impressive fuel consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometres.
1.4 delivering 63kW – Comfortline
The Comfortline has 1.4 63kW engine with 132 Nm of torque available at 3750rpm. Its average fuel consumption is 5.9 l/100km.
1.6 delivering 77kW – Comfortline Tiptronic, Highline
The 77 kW 1.6-liter engine is offered with 6-speed manual as well as in automatic (Tiptronic) transmission. With 153Nm of torque at 3800rpm, this engine delivers lively performance. It only takes 10.8 seconds to reach 100km/h and has top speed of 188km/h. On average, it has combined fuel consumption of 6.2 (6.1 for Tiptronic) liters for every 100 kilometres.
1.0 TSI delivering 81 kW – GT
With a top speed of 196 km/h, the 1.0 litre 81 kW engine offers exciting performance. The 200 Nm torque is available at 2000rpm. The performance has not compromised fuel consumption. The 81 kW engine has an impressive claimed fuel consumption of 4.6 liters per 100 kilometres.

The Volkswagen factory in Uitenhage is one of the three plants in the Volkswagen production network that assembles the Polo hatch. In South Africa, the Polo is produced for both the local and export markets. Since its launch in 2010, the Polo hatch has consistently been the second best-selling passenger car in South Africa, with its sibling the Polo Vivo being the best-selling. Close to 200 000 units have been sold since 2010. In 2017 alone, the Polo was bought by 22 916 customers in South Africa. Internationally the Polo has sold more than 14 million units to date, making the Polo one of the world’s most successful compact cars.
The new Polo, a completely redesigned generation of this best-selling car has a clear, powerful design, more interior room, more efficient engines and pioneering driver assistance systems.
The sixth generation Polo has a new exterior design, which makes the car appear sportier and more grown up. The new generation Polo is one of the world’s most advanced compact cars – this is reflected in advanced features such as the multitude of driver assistance systems that were previously reserved for the Golf and Passat class. The new Polo is also bigger than its predecessor in every dimension and offers more space for the driver and passengers, as well as significantly increased boot volume which increased from 280 to 350 litres.

MQB A0 as the basis. Like the Golf, Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Arteon, the Polo is now also based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). Here the A0 version is adapted for particularly compact models. The MQB A0 has a whole armada of advantages. The compact proportions, which the design team also used as a starting point for a very dynamic look, immediately catch the eye. In addition, the technical advantages of the MQB can be found under the vehicle skin such as an optimised package, improved body stiffness, very good crash properties and an unchanged body weight – despite the greater size and enhanced safety features. Thanks to the use of MQB A0, comfort gains have also been made courtesy of the 92mm longer wheelbase, optimised entry and exit for rear seating and overall package improvements.
Larger and sportier. The positive effects of the MQB A0 on the car’s proportions and, in turn, on its design, are huge. The car has much more dynamic proportions and a significantly longer silhouette, because the wheelbase, exterior length and width have all grown while the car’s height remains nearly identical. What this translates to is an increased boot size that does not compromise on rear occupant space, which has also improved with great rear leg room. The design team took advantage of these realigned dimensions to put a-sporty, powerful, fresh and masculine Polo onto wheels of up to 18 inches in size.
Simply impressive. The dynamic effects of the MQB A0 on the proportions are reflected in the Polo’s new dimensions. The length of the compact Volkswagen has grown by 81mm to 4,053mm, and its wheelbase has also been lengthened by 81mm to 2,548mm. This means that the wheels are now positioned further to the front and rear, which also shortens the overhangs and gives the car a more powerful and sportier appearance. At the same time, the Polo is now 69mm wider and has an overall width of 1,751mm. Its height has been reduced by 8mm to 1,461mm.
Silhouette. The sixth generation Polo has become a more ‘masculine’ car, which generates a unique charisma from all perspectives with its new expressive design. The roof line is longer and therefore more elegant and also transitions into a roof spoiler at the rear. A fine line on the side body runs parallel to the roof line, visually lowering the centre of gravity. Key detailing of the Polo includes its long line of side windows – the Polo is the only Volkswagen to have a window line that terminates in a rise at both front and rear. This contour with the window integrated into the C-pillar was further developed and sharpened. The C-pillar in particular, which is now designed to reach forward more and is precisely sculpted, makes the car dynamic and appear to lunge forward, even when stationary.
Arrow-shaped double line. Emerging from the straight line of the window shoulder is another line that runs towards the front and into the headlights, making the Polo appear very long. Other new and important design features follow beneath this window line. An arrow-shaped double line, which is known as the tornado line, is a new design feature defining the Polo. The surface of this three-dimensional tornado line is – in the style of a shoulder section – slightly flared, and it finishes with a sharp downward undercut. The upper of these two double lines starts in the C-pillar and visually shoots forward into the front wings. The second, lower line, on the other hand, forms the undercut. It develops from the 3D graphic of the tail lights and also extends forward into the front wings, where it rises slightly, meeting the upper line.
Front end. The front end is designed to be much more emotional, dominant and sportier than that of the previous model. The headlights are now also available with LED technology. Together with the radiator grille, they form the new ‘face’ of the Polo that extends across the entire vehicle width. The bumper also emphasises vehicle width in its design elements. The bonnet now extends far downward into the ‘face’. The bumper has also been completely redesigned. The large glass surfaces of the fog lights and turn signal lights are eye-catching from the side of the car. They terminate outwards in three-dimensionally contoured corners. Between them there are two air intakes: a V-shaped one in the middle, and a narrow second intake that extends across the entire width.
Rear. The Polo’s rear bodywork design had already made it an inductee to the Automotive Hall of Fame by the time the fifth generation made its debut. Now the clean, very well-balanced overall architecture has been significantly further developed and – like the sides and front end – made even more precise and sharp. The new trapezoidal-shaped tail lights are worked into the shoulder section (optionally available as LED tail light clusters for the first time). A horizontal line beneath the tail lights on the rear hatch now flows into the bumper and also underscores the Polo’s width from this perspective. The new diffuser is now integrated into the bumper.
Trim, instrument panel and dashpad decors. Parallel to the standard features, the trim lines feature different interior trims, colours and fabrics. One of the most striking individualisation features is the instrument panel with the dashpad. New for this generation of Polo, this dashpad is offered with different coloured trims. Two dashpad coloured trims are available; Limestone Grey Metallic on the Trendline and Comfortline and Deep Iron Metallic on Highline.
The new proportions with a larger wheelbase and a longer silhouette – can be found in the interior as well. The newly-developed horizontal dashboard design focuses on the driver; for example, the dashboard and the centre console are slightly angled. All key modules are located on one visual axis, creating a coherent digital cockpit landscape.
A benchmark in this class. The new generation of the Active Info Display makes its debut in the Polo. The combines the new Active Info Display and the new 8-inch touchscreen to form a modern, glass-encased functional unit that creates an elegant appearance combined with simple controls similar to a high-end smartphone. Almost all the interior elements in the sixth generation Polo have been newly-designed. The aim was to design a fresh, dynamic and top-quality new generation of the Polo. The asymmetric centre console, painted in a fresh colour for visible integration, is an important connecting design element in the new cockpit. The Active Info Display is available in South Africa from launch and is optional on the Comfortline and Highline models.
New Polo – new colourfulness. The new Polo comes in 10 exterior colours; Pure White, Flash Red, Dark Petrol, Reflex Silver Metallic, Limestone Grey Metallic, Pale Copper, Reef Blue, Energetic Orange, Deep Black Pearl Effect and White Silver Metallic.
Interior colours and instrument panel decors are offered in the following colours’ Limestone Grey metallic, Deep Iron metallic, Velvet Red and Reef Blue.
Polo beats: Sporty, cool and top-quality – all in one. Several beats logos and the 300-watt sound system from the headphones producer “beats by Dr. Dre” reveal where the name came from. The ultra-modern colourful beats special edition of the new Polo is ideally suited to the lifestyle-oriented target group. The dashpad in “Velvet Red” is particularly impressive. A complex development process came up with a special anodized paint which produces a matt finish while still retaining a deep 3D optic effect. Wrapping up the package are the beats logos on the exterior B pillars, side sills emblazoned with beats audio branding and a striking seat upholstery design in Aqua Graphite, Velvet Red and Ceramique.
Cockpit is the centre of focus. A new dashboard and cockpit layout makes its way into Volkswagen compact models via the sixth generation Polo. The interior team started with a blank slate, departing entirely from the vertically-oriented dashboard layout of the previous model and developing instead a bold horizontal architecture. This architecture is primarily defined by the modules that are used on the dashboard. In the Polo, designers took the ‘form follows function’ motto very seriously. The interaction between the new Active Info Display and the infotainment systems, in particular, made it necessary to take new approaches. The new dashboard architecture began with the goal of locating the infotainment system much higher than before so that it would be in the driver’s direct line of sight. Because the display should visually merge with the instruments, it was also clear that the middle air vents had to migrate downward. All of this has resulted in a dashboard architecture that is refreshingly contemporary and charismatic – introducing an exciting new era of digitalisation and connectivity.
One visual and control axis, up high. All key modules – except for the air conditioning unit – have been integrated on the upper cross-panel of the dashboard. This cross-panel is continued up to the front doors and is trimmed with various colours, depending on selected options. The outer air vents are integrated on the far left and right. Located in the middle of the high-gloss black ‘island’ is the screen of the infotainment system. The only additional button in this area is the button for the hazard warning lights. To the right, the high-gloss black user control island merges into the level of the instruments. This creates a coherent digital cockpit landscape, especially in conjunction with the Active Info Display. Arranged on the next lower level are the air conditioning functions in the middle, and the lighting functions on the driver’s side. The horizontal dashboard is slightly angled towards the driver in the middle. This is also true of the centre console with the gear shift grip and the buttons for the various car handling functions.
1.0 TSI with 70 kW. The smallest TSI for the new Polo has an output of 70 kW (at 5,000 rpm). The turbocharged engine, which is standard for both the Polo Trendline and Comfortline, is both agile and efficient. The three-cylinder engine with torque of up to 175 Nm (2,000 rpm) accelerates the Polo to 100 km/h in just 10.8 seconds. With a top speed of 187 km/h it reaches the level of the first Golf GTI. These figures apply to both the 5-speed manual gearbox version and the optional 7-speed DSG version for this engine. The high agility is coupled with low combined fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (corresponding to 103 g/km CO2). The 7-speed DSG has a fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km and emits 107 g/km of CO2.
1.0 TSI with 85 kW. The most powerful 1.0 TSI / three-cylinder for the Polo is the version with 85 kW. This engine will be launched with a 6-speed gearbox as standard and optionally with a 7-speed DSG. The turbocharged direct injection engine develops its peak output at 5,000 rpm. The lively four valves per cylinder engine delivers its maximum torque of 200 Nm from 2,000 rpm.
The new standard running gear forms the basis and makes its way into the range with the Polo’s switch to the modular transverse matrix (MQB A0).
Standard running gear. The basic configuration of the Polo running gear offers a high level of agility and excellent comfort. In the neutral setup of the running gear priority was given to maximum active safety. The front suspensions of the Polo that always comes with front-wheel drive feature coil spring struts and lower wishbones with a track-stabilising scrub radius. The front running gear additionally features an anti-roll bar. The front suspension consists of coil springs with telescoping compressed gas dampers; the elements are integrated in the spring struts. The rear running gear consists of a semi-independent twist-beam suspension with an integrated anti-roll bar. Gas-filled dampers and separate springs on the rear axle provide for optional suspension.
New Driver Assistance systems. New features for the Polo include the lane change system
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, semi-automated Park Assist system for exiting parking spaces, the proactive occupant protection system and a manoeuvre braking function. The latter automatically protects against minor but often expensive parking dents. The optional Keyless Access locking and engine starting system, which is also new, can be used to unlock and start up the Polo.
Blind Spot Monitor. This system can play a role in preventing serious accidents. The Blind Spot Monitor utilises an LED symbol in the outer area of the door mirrors to alert the driver’s attention to vehicles located in the blind spot on the side of the Polo and vehicles approaching from the rear. As soon as that is the case, the symbol lights up, and if the driver activates the turn indicator in the direction of the detected vehicle the symbol flashes as an additional warning. This lowers the risk of hazardous lane-changing situations. The system, which is automatically activated from a speed of 30 km/h, uses radar sensors to monitor an area of approximately 20 metres around the vehicle. When the Blind Spot Monitor is ordered, it automatically comes with Rear Traffic Alert, which revolutionises reversing out of parking spaces.
Rear Traffic Alert. Rear Traffic Alert further improves safety and is offered in combination with the Blind Spot Monitor. Rear Traffic Alert takes much of the risk out of reversing from driveways and parking spaces that are at right angles to the road. The system not only ‘recognises’ stationary or moving vehicles directly behind the Polo, but also vehicles approaching from the side which are barely visible to the driver. The radar-based sensor module even detects objects at distances of up to 40 metres and recognises objects moving at speeds of 4 km/h or above. If a collision is imminent, the system outputs an acoustic warning. If the driver or third party does not take action to correct the situation, or if there is a risk of immediate collision, the Rear Traffic Alert system automatically initiates a brake intervention.
Driver Alert System. This system, which is standard from the Polo Comfortline, detects waning concentration of the driver and warns him or her over a period of five seconds with an acoustic signal and a visual text in the instrument cluster that recommends taking a break. If the driver does not take a break within the next 15 minutes, the warning is repeated once.
Multi Collision Braking (Automatic Post-Collision Braking System). Just around a quarter of all accidents that result in personal injury involve multiple collisions. The Polo’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System can help to avoid secondary collisions or at least reduce their severity. After an initial collision, the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System automatically initiates a braking action – within system limits – even before the driver can react. This can reduce the severity of the accident and ideally prevent secondary collisions.
Driving Profile Selection. This feature is standard on the Highline. In driving profile selection the driver can choose from a total of four programmes: Eco, Sport, Normal and Individual. In the Eco driving mode, engine control, the air conditioning unit and other auxiliary systems are regulated in a manner that ensures optimal fuel efficiency. In vehicles fitted with DSG, a coasting function can also be used with the Eco mode: if the driver releases the accelerator pedal – for example, on downhill stretches – the DSG disengages and the engine idles. This enables optimal utilisation of the Polo’s kinetic energy. In Sport mode, on the other hand, damping of the adjustable dampers is increased (with Sport Select running gear), while engine response and shift points of the DSG are configured to be more dynamic.
Park Assist. This assistance system automatically guides the Polo into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces, and it can also reverse out of parallel parking spaces. It is activated by pressing a button on the centre console. Using the indicators, the driver selects the side on which the car is to be parked. If Park Assist detects via the ultrasonic sensors a parking space that is large enough (40 cm of manoeuvring room, front and rear suffices), assisted parking can begin: the driver engages reverse gear and only needs to accelerate and brake (an automatic braking function assists in the event of insufficient space). The car takes care of the steering.
Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator. The Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator uses the wheel speed sensors of the ABS: in the event of tyre pressure loss, the rolling radius of the wheel concerned decreases and the wheel turns faster at the same vehicle speed. The system detects insufficient air pressure and warns the driver. However, the Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator does not relieve the driver of the obligation to regularly check the tyre pressures.
World premiere of the new Active Info Display. The Polo will launch as the first Volkswagen and the first Group model to offer a new generation of Active Info Display. Volkswagen interface designers have systematically advanced the next generation of the Active Info Display (11.7-inch display diagonal) and have taken its high-quality graphics (133 dpi / resolution 1,280 x 480 pixels) and functional range to a new level. Consequently, the display offers better graphic performance, higher pixel density, greater brightness and contrast, more intense colours and fewer conventional indicator lamps. Using a ‘View button’ on the multifunction steering wheel, the Polo driver can now also switch between three basic layouts, easily and quickly. The Active Info Display is optional across the range excluding Trendline models and is available in South Africa from launch.
Completely new look and feel. The high-quality graphics convey a completely new look and feel with their progressive design. The crucial aspect here is that Volkswagen has fundamentally redefined fully digital instruments. The interface designers utilised the digital display to integrate additional information levels into the instruments. The graphics of the round instruments (dials), such as the rev counter and speedometer, however, follow the appearance of their analogue counterparts. At the next stage of digital instruments, interface designers have departed from the analogue look entirely and created a consistently digitalised world of instruments. They developed three basic digital layouts between which the driver can toggle with the ‘View button’.
New cockpit environment (Available in South Africa from launch). A new, digital and interactive cockpit environment has been created in the interplay of the Active Info Display and infotainment system. Volkswagen is introducing the latest generation of infotainment systems in the Polo which have display sizes ranging from 6.5 to 8.0 inches. Specifically, these are the Composition Colour (6.5-inch radio-infotainment), Composition Media (8.0-inch radio-infotainment with CD player) and Discover Media (8.0-inch radio-navigation infotainment with CD player). The 8.0-inch systems are glass-encased units.
Composition Colour. The Composition Colour infotainment system boasts a touch-sensitive 6.5-inch colour display (16.5 cm screen diagonal), good resolution (800 x 480 pixels) and a design that immediately appeals to users of smartphones and tablets. Its surface is clear and elegant. In addition to two rotary/push-button switches, there are six flat menu buttons. Its 2 x 20 watts of audio power is output over four loudspeakers. If six loudspeakers are installed in the car, the power is increased to
4 x 20 watts. Along with the FM radio, the infotainment system also offers an integrated SD card interface over which music can be played back in MP3 or WMA format. Like the next larger Composition Media system, the Composition Colour is also equipped with a diversity antenna; there are several antennas, and signal noise can be filtered out by linking them. A USB interface is offered as an option (Apple compatible).The touchscreen on this system is pressure sensitive.
Composition Media. The Composition Media features a glass surface (glass design) with an 8-inch colour display. This glass surface creates a tablet-like look. In addition to two rotary/push-button controls, the system has eight function buttons. The sound of the infotainment system (4 x 20 watts) is output over six loudspeakers. Along with the SD card and AUX-IN interfaces, it also offers a USB port (compatible with Apple), a Bluetooth connection and a CD drive. The touchscreen on this system is touch sensitive.
Discover Media. Discover Media is the radio navigation system for the Polo. It is based on the Composition Media infotainment system and includes additional navigation functionality. Updates to the navigation software are provided free-of-charge for the first five years. In addition, this includes a licence for Car-Net ‘Guide & Inform’ services which is also free-of-charge.
App Connect. The latest generation modular infotainment matrix creates the right conditions for connecting the Polo with today’s Apple and Android smartphones via App Connect. Along with MirrorLinkÒ (Android), App Connect now also integrates Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ (Google) into the infotainment systems. Please note that Google has not released Android Auto for the South African market.
The new Polo will be available in the three trim lines Trendline, Comfortline and Highline and also as a special Beats version (with a 300-watt Beats sound system). The Polo GTI will be launched in South Africa in the second quarter.
Exterior – features distinguishing the different versions. Fine details distinguish the exterior of the three trim lines Trendline, Comfortline and Highline from one another. The Polo Comfortline is identified by a chrome strip in the radiator grille between the headlights and colour-coded mirrors and door handles. The Polo Highline has additional chrome strips in the lower ventilation grille. Features upgrading the Polo beats include black painted exterior mirror housings, decorative decals on the bonnet and roof and ‘beats’ badging on the B-pillars. The R-Line package (optional on Comfortline and Highline) features a sport front bumper with gloss black C-shaped air curtains, side sills, gloss black rear boot spoiler and a sporty rear diffuser.
Further exterior identifying features include the wheel and tyre combinations. The Polo Trendline is supplied with 14-inch steel wheel with wheel covers, customers opting for the Polo Comfortline automatically get the configuration of 15-inch alloy wheels with Salou wheel trims (15-inch Sassari alloy wheels are a no cost option) and the Polo Highline is fitted with 16-inch ‘Las Minas’ alloy wheels as standard. The Polo Beats is fitted with 16-inch rims (‘Torsby’ alloy wheels) and finally the R-Line is equipped with 17-inch Bonneville alloy wheels. The R-Line Package is only available in South Africa from the beginning of the second quarter.
Trendline. The Trendline base version is very well equipped. Standard features include assistance systems such as the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System as well as LED daytime running lights and front and rear curtain airbags. Front Electric Windows, Composition Colour infotainment system with four speakers and a Connectivity Package featuring Bluetooth and USB also come as standard.
Comfortline. At the Comfortline trim level, additional details are included such as
Multi-function Display “Plus”, the Composition Colour infotainment system with six speakers, leather multi-function steering wheel, Driver Alert System and front and rear electric windows.
Highline. Those who select the Highline get features such as Composition Media infotainment system, App Connect, Voice Control, Sport seats, Cruise Control with speed limiter and white LED ambient lighting (front doors and instrument panel).
beats. The new edition of the successful Polo beats special model has a 300-watt sound system from legendary US audio specialist ‘beats’ (by Dr. Dre) and a whole array of customised features on board. The newly-designed amplifier and subwoofer are housed at the bottom of the boot to the left hand side of the spare wheel well, where a full-size spare wheel is housed.
The Comfortline and Highline trim versions can be further personalised by choosing the R-Line package.
R-Line. The ‘R-Line’ package makes the Polo even more dynamic with such features as 17-inch alloy wheels (‘Bonneville’), a large, sporty front bumper and, at the rear, a diffuser with chrome trims and a roof spoiler. The Polo with R-Line package also has wrap-around black sill trim strips which visually press the car down to the road. The R-Line Package is only available in South Africa from the beginning of the second quarter.
Convenience and comfort features from the Golf class. The Polo can be further personalised and upgraded to satisfy individual budgets and tastes. New in the options programme are features such as high-intensity full-LED headlights, LED tail light clusters and one of the largest panoramic sunroofs in its class (opening is 10 mm wider and 20 mm longer than before). The new Polo can be personalised to create a car that is practically one-of-a-kind by choosing from many different trim lines, colours, interiors, wheels and optional features.
Following the launch of the new Golf TSI and Golf GTI facelift, Volkswagen has introduced two more performance models in the Golf range namely the Golf R and Golf GTD.
With over 350 000 Golf’s sold in South Africa since its launch four decades ago, the updated version of the seventh generation Golf is once again redefining its market segment by bringing ‘big car’ technology to the compact family car class. The Golf R’s popularity in South Africa continues to strengthen and together with the GTI make up nearly 60% of Golf sales in South Africa.
Traditionally, the Golf R has always been the most powerful model in the comprehensive Golf range. The power output of the latest Golf R moves to 213 kW, making it the most powerful series Golf ever sold in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the GTD, which is Volkswagen’s only performance diesel derivative hatch to be launched in South Africa, combines the performance of a sports car with the fuel economy of a sub-compact car in a most enticing way. This “GTI among the diesels” is driven by an entirely new four-cylinder TDI of the EA288 series which can also be found on the Volkswagen Passat – a transverse mounted, charged two-litre engine with common rail direct injection. The 2.0litre TDI engine develops 130kW at 3,600 to 4,000 rpm. Its torque is a substantial 350 Nm.
These performance models create a new benchmark for assistance systems in the compact class, employing technologies that will significantly improve safety. These include the optional Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking System.
The design features of the Golf R give the car dynamism with even more charisma. The newly designed bumpers, LED headlights and LED tail lights create a design that takes on an even more dynamic look. The tailpipes were placed further out to the sides; this gives the car a wider appearance. The upgraded exterior mirror housing caps come in Chrome Matt or optionally in Carbon and there are also various 19-inch wheel choices. New here are the standard “Spielberg” 19-inch alloy wheels or the optional 19-inch Pretoria alloy wheels in grey metallic.
As in all new Golf derivatives, the new infotainment systems, such as the 9.2-inch Discover Pro with gesture control are also available in the new Golf R. Standard on the Golf R is the Active Info Display, panoramic sunroof and drive profile selection which includes the Sport HMI feature. Adaptive chassis control in an optional extra on both Golf GTD and Golf R and offer the same feature – Sport HMI. In the Sport profile, the ‘Sport HMI’ of the infotainment system on the centre console shows current engine parameters such as power output and G-forces in play. A lap timer is included in all performance Golf models namely the Golf R, Golf GTI and Golf GTD with Active Info Display.
Visually, the Golf GTD looks similar to the new GTI, with just a few individual nuances. The differentiating characteristics are the chrome strip on the GTD, which now extends into the headlights compared to the red trim strip on the GTI radiator grille. At the rear, the GTD can be made out by the dual tailpipes on the left side (in chrome). The Golf GTD is exclusively equipped with new 18-inch wheels in “Sevilla” design as standard. Similarly to GTI, the GTD has additional air inlet openings in the front bumper; a honeycomb structure of the air inlet screens; LED headlights with an unmistakable light signature and a pronounced roof spoiler.
There is another strong and significant GTD element that was completely reinterpreted, the chrome line of the GTD radiator grille. This line terminates the lower edge of the radiator grille, but then it is further extended to the left and right into the housings of the standard LED headlights. So, the line runs across the entire width of the front end; as a horizontal element it runs parallel to the bonnet seam and the bumper.
At the very bottom of the bumper, beneath the cross panel painted in body colour, the black air inlet (with its honeycomb structure screen) is now no longer surrounded by another black area, rather by surfaces painted in body colour. In this way, the air inlet makes a stronger impression; simultaneously, the three lateral, black aerodynamic fins beneath the headlights also terminate the front end. Another detail fitting in with the precisely contoured styling is the black splitter (lower edge of the front bumper), which is familiar from motorsport.
From a side view, the sportiest Golf diesel can be readily made out by the even longer look of its roof section due to the pronounced roof spoiler and by the alloy wheels specially designed for the GTD. Even in side profile, the light contours of the standard LED daytime running lights and the standard LED rear lights stand out.
The Golf GTD is offered in the following colours: Tornado Red, Pure White, Dark Iron Blue Metallic, Atlantic Blue Metallic, White Silver Metallic, Indium Grey Metallic, Tungsten Silver Metallic, Deep Black Pearl Effect and Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect.
Additionally, the Golf R is available in the optional new Turmeric Yellow Metallic and the classic Lapiz Blue Metallic paint finish, but excluding Dark Iron Blue Metallic and Tungsten Silver Metallic.
ENGINES, TRANSMISSIONS AND RUNNING GEAR
The engine line up of the models includes the all-new GTD with 130kW and the Golf R with 213kW.
2.0 TDI with 130kW. The new EA288 engine spurs the Golf GTD on to extremely sporty driving performance. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds; the Volkswagen also sprints from 80 to 120 km/h in a short 7.5 seconds (in fifth gear) and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h.
This GTD is driven by an entirely new four-cylinder TDI – a transverse mounted, charged two-litre engine with common rail direct injection. Its maximum torque is 350 Nm which is available over a broad rev range between 1, 500 and 3, 500 rpm.
With a 6-speed DSG, the GTD has a combined fuel consumption of just 5.3 l/100 km, exhibiting the fuel consumption of a highly efficient car.
2.0 TSI with 213kW. The new Golf R rockets to 100 km/h in a swift 4.6 seconds. This gain in dynamics is not only attributable to the new and extremely fast-shifting 7-speed DSG, and the standard Launch Control feature of this model; rather, it is also due to the overall high engine output. That is because the DSG version offers a maximum torque of 380 Nm (between 1, 850 and 5, 300 rpm). Fuel consumption on the new Golf R is 6.9litres/100km.
